YANKEE MY DOODLE

How to choose a photo for your dog portrait

The best photo for a custom dog portrait is a sharp, well-lit picture taken at your dog’s eye level, with the eyes, nose and ears clearly visible. A phone photo is enough. You do not need a professional shoot or a perfect background.

Choose 1–3 photos of the same dog. We accept JPG, PNG, WebP and iPhone HEIC/HEIF files, up to 10 MB each. One clear photo is enough to start.

A quick photo checklist

  1. Get down to eye level. Hold the camera near your dog’s eyes instead of pointing down from above. A front-facing or gentle three-quarter view gives us a useful view of the face.
  2. Use soft, natural light. Try beside a window or outdoors in open shade. Face your dog toward the light so their eyes and coat details are visible; avoid bright light directly behind them.
  3. Keep the whole face in the frame. Include both ears when possible and leave a little space around the head. Move closer instead of using heavy digital zoom.
  4. Check the eyes and nose are sharp. Tap the face to focus, take a few pictures and choose the clearest one. Zoom in afterward to check for motion blur.
  5. Keep their real colors and markings. Choose the original photo without beauty filters, heavy color edits, stickers or objects covering the face.

Which photo should I choose?

Start with the picture that looks most like your dog: their usual expression, clear eyes and visible facial markings. If you have a favorite grin, head tilt or distinctive feature, mention it in the optional artist notes.

  • Dark coats: choose a photo where you can still see the eyes, muzzle and fur detail, rather than a silhouette.
  • Fluffy faces: choose an angle that shows the eyes and nose. An extra reference can help explain markings hidden by fur.
  • Older or memorial photos: choose the clearest original available. If it is small, faded or partly obscured, contact us before ordering so we can review whether it is suitable.

A busy background is usually less important than a clear face. You do not need to dress your dog in a costume; we create the patriotic setting and outfit.

How to upload from an iPhone

  1. Open the portrait form and tap the photo upload box.
  2. Choose your photo library when your phone offers it, then select 1–3 photos of the same dog. If a photo is stored only in iCloud, let it finish downloading before continuing.
  3. Wait for each thumbnail to appear. HEIC/HEIF photos are prepared automatically; keep the page open while the preparation message is showing.
  4. Check the previews. Tap × to remove a photo, or use the same box to add another. Then enter your dog’s name, choose a character and continue to your cart.

You do not need to change your iPhone’s camera settings or manually convert a normal HEIC photo. The site prepares it as a JPEG for the portrait workflow.

Common photo questions

Do I need three photos?

No. One sharp photo is enough. Up to two extra angles can help show coat markings or facial details. Use photos of the same dog for one portrait.

Can I upload a screenshot or a social-media image?

The original photo is preferable because screenshots and downloaded social images can lose detail. If that is all you have, check that the face stays clear when enlarged and contact us if you are unsure.

What if my photo will not upload?

Check that it is JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC or HEIF and no larger than 10 MB. Wait for any iCloud download to finish. If preparation fails, try another photo or an existing JPG. Your previously selected photos stay in the box. For help, contact us and tell us the message you see.

Will you print without showing me the portrait?

No. After payment, we create your portrait and email a personal proof, usually in 3–5 business days. One consolidated revision to the same dog and character is included. Nothing is printed until you approve. See our portrait FAQs for timing and delivery details.

Your very good dog is ready for history.

Choose George Washington, President Barkington, Uncle Sam or Paul Revere. Custom prints start at $59; every order includes your approved digital portrait.
